a free lunch?

I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage “there’s no such thing as a free lunch!”.  I suppose that’s true, in retrospect.

I’m glad I never realized the stigma of “a free lunch”.  We lived with my grandparents back then – me, my younger brother and my mom.  Mom worked 2 jobs to support my brother and I, and we always qualified for the free lunch program at school.

I’m glad that I wasn’t aware of the stigma that that brings to today’s youth.  I’m glad that I sat down with my little square of cheese pizza, milk and brownie or sloppy joe, fries and milk, that I was free to eat without the worry that people KNEW that my SINGLE, DIVORCED mother who worked 2 jobs, still made under the maximum allowed to pay for lunch.

I could sit down, eat my “free” lunch, play cards or cat’s cradle, and talk with friends, without worry. Without fear of being ostracized.

No, they used my other ‘faults’ for that.

{w}rite of passage entry – lunch box.

I realize that this wasn’t the exact nature of the theme, but this was what came to mind first, and so that’s what I wrote :)
